A rare buttonhole back badge for the Metropolitan Asylums Board.The MAB operated between 1867 and 1930 and in many respects was the precursor to the NHS operating Hospitals for the "sick poor",Isolation and TB Hospitals ,Mental Hospitals as well as Ambulance Services in the capital.Many of their hospitals were taken on by the London County Council in April of 1930.
The badge itself featuresthe shield of the Metropolitan Asylums Board, blazoned, argent on a cross gules the rod of Aesculapius or, a bordure engrailed sable.(Basically a Red cross on a white background emblazoned with the rod of Aesculpius) It has pin back fixing which is intact and is marked for the makers Fattorini & Sons Bradford.The enamel is in good condition with minor scratches only.Height 34mm
