A group of medals and orders awarded to one nurse for her Nursing and associated service with the Order of St John
These are ,as mounted a serving Site officer badge of the order of St John, a WW2 Defence medal unnamed and a Service medal of the order of St John with three additional bars, denoting a total of 30 years service.This is named to the edge D/Supt I Hymas Yorks SJAB.These are accompanied by a matching set of miniatures.There is also a SJAB medal in chrome numbered 455342 named to Irene Hymas.
There is also a Order of St John Serving Sister badge with bow ribbon named to IR Hymas April 1959.Included are a number of smaller SJAB badges and a pair of National Hospital Service reserve badges. A silver blood transfer badge hallmarked for 1956 is also included.
The nursing items are a rare Royal London Homeopathic Hospital Badge in red enamel.This later pattern badge features an Ouroboros,a snake eating it's own tail symbolising renewal.Within this is a shield quartered diagonally with RLHH at the top.At the centre is an open book with the dates 1000 and 1849.In each quarter are a Rose,Shamrock,Caduceus and Thistle.Above the shield on a scroll are the words Similia,Similibus,Curentur-Let Like be Healed By Like,the tenet of Homoeopathy.I understand that this may have been a long service badge although it may relate to training,see; http://sueyounghistories.com/archives/2008/10/11/the-royal-london-homeopathic-hospital/
this is named to Irene Ruth Stickland July 1920 -July 1924. the GNC register shows this as being Irene Ruth Hymas nee Strickland who trained at the London Homeopathic Hospital from 1920-23.The next item is a Certified Midwife badge from the CNB.This is named IR Stickland 67640 15.8.25.Finally we have a silver Royal College of Nursing members badge 1939-46 pattern numbered 56922.
Born in 1899 in Portsea Hampshire, Irene Ruth Stickland married John Hymas in 1927 and lived in Harrogate until her death in 1980.
